I have been exchanging emails with Asus over the past few weeks, trying to get VT-d working in Xen on a P6T X58 series board with an i Does Intel have any say in how their technology is implemented by a company like ASUS if it is not being implemented properly?

I'm not sure what CPU you are using i? Here's a link to all the Intel CPUs that support VT-D, check the search options on the left of the screen to confirm the seach criteria:. If you are not sure, goto Intel's website to verify. I have noticed a lot of people having trouble getting the install off the ground because of Vt-D. I think it should be recommended in the install guides that it is Disabled to make things easier for everyone.
We do not need it for VMWare and Parallels, they work fine without it. I've read most Macs come with it disabled, except for the MacPro and Xserve. Which means, probably the only CPU's that work, are Xeon's. I'm thinking, but i could be wrong, that no one has it working with a supported CPU except Xeon. If someone has it working, please list the Name of your CPU. So, we have one, can you please list what CPU you are using, thank you. I am using a k and I have VT-d enabled.
On my initial install I had it disabled, but VirtualBox was crashing on me a lot. I enabled VT-d and VirtualBox now runs without crashing and I can use 64 bit guest OS's. VirtualBox only supports 32 bit guests without VT-d enabled.I also read a lot about that. But I couldn't find any official statement about that. Is there one? And is there any other possibility to set these settings without going to BIOS manually and set it there? Then go over to the Security tab and down to the System Security line.
Change it to Enable also. Choose to Save Changes and Exit at the bottom I know how to set that setting in BIOS manually. Still no response to this? Doing so from the BIOS menu during reboot is not an enterprise solution. I need to automate this. This tool is provided by HP to select workstations. Still, I am not sure if processor virtualization settings are included among those settings that can be modified while Windows operating system is running.

In order to workthose virtual machine apps need hardware acceleration features built into modern CPUs. These errors can pop up for a couple of different reasons. The first is that the hardware acceleration feature may be disabled.

Using virtualization capabilities, one physical computer system can function as multiple "virtual" systems. These inherently helps IT managers reduce the overall total cost of ownership by reducing potential down time and increasing productive throughput by better utilization of the data center resources.
To create virtual machines or guests a virtual machine monitor VMM aka hypervisor acts as a host and has full control of the platform hardware.
This is done in software using either of two well known models: Emulation of devices or Paravirtualization. Intel VT-d enables protection by restricting direct memory access DMA of the devices to pre-assigned domains or physical memory regions. This is achieved by a hardware capability known as DMA-remapping. It is programmed by the computer s ystem software.
In a virtualization environment the system software is the VMM. In a native environment where there is no virtualization software, the system software is the native OS. DMA-remapping translates the address of the incoming DMA request to the correct physical memory address and perform checks for permissions to access that physical address, based on the information provided by the system software. Each protection domain is an isolated environment containing a subset of the host physical memory.
If the device tries to access outside of the range it is permitted to access, the DMA remapping hardware blocks the access and reports a fault to the system software.
Please see Figure 1. Device-1 is not assigned to Domain-C, so when Device-1 tries to access Domain-C memory location range, it is restricted by the VT-d hardware. Virtualization allows the creation of multiple virtual machines on a single server. With this emulation layer the VMM provides a consistent view of a hardware device to the VMs and the device can be shared amongst many VMs.
In this model, the VMM restricts itself to a controlling function for enabling direct assignment of devices to its partitions. DMA remapping hardware can be used to do the appropriate conversion.
Using the remapping, the data can now be transferred directly to the appropriate buffer of the guests rather than going through an intermediate software emulation layer. The data gets transferred through the emulation layer to the device and from the device to the to the emulation layer. In the direct assignment model, the unmodified guest OS driver controls the device it is assigned. On the receive path the DMA-remapping hardware converts the GPA provided by the guest OS driver to the correct HPA, such that the data is transferred directly to the buffers of the guest OS instead of passing through the emulation layer.
Interrupt remapping support in VT-d architecture allows interrupt control to also be directly assigned to the VM, further reducing the VMM overheads.
VT-d can become the foundation for creating secure and isolated work partitions in servers, workstations and new class of combined hardware and software offerings called virtual appliances. Virtual machines in a virtual environment can be segregated into different protection domains from the application end to the device end. Test and development environments using servers with mult iple VMs, workstations with multiple co-existing OSes running in virtualized environments can all benefit from isolated work partitions.
These enable server consolidation, reliability and availability as mission-critical applications are moved onto virtualized data center servers and infrastructures. Virtualization enables the consolidation of workloads to an under-utilized server.
Intel VT-d can help VMMs improve reliability and security by isolating these devices to protected domains. By controlling access of devices to specific memory ranges, end to end VM to device isolation can be achieved by the VMM. This helps improve security, reliability and availability.

Device isolation can be achieved in non-virtualized platforms as well. Device driver developers can use device isolation to specific memory ranges for debugging hardware or a device driver DMA that is accessing undesired memory ranges.
System software using Intel VT-d DMA remapping capabilities improves performance by avoiding bounce buffer [i] conditions. When bounce buffers are used between a 32 bit device performing DMA and a physical memory range that is inaccessible due to 32 bit address limitations, system software can use Intel VT-d DMA remapping capability to redirect the data to high memory rather than performing buffer copies.

However, VM's are creeping into software now. My virus checker can create VM's on the fly when it finds a suspicious piece of code trying to run so it can try it out there first and if it tries to trash anything, it just deletes the VM and no harm done except to the virus. So the motherboard knows that but probably the CPU doesn't support it.
